FAQ

Q: Do I need a FCC license to operate two-way radios?

A: Yes and No. Business frequencies require an FCC license. Individuals and families who use consumer model radios on FRS frequencies do not need a license. If you use GMRS frequencies, Yes you need a FCC license. This license is good for 5 years and covers the applicant and his/her immediate family. GMRS licenses are not issued to businesses.

We can assist with your business license requirements.

Q: What Radios should I use for my Business?

A:  First we need to evaluate your requirements by learning about your business and communications operation. From this we can determine the specific models that will meet your needs. If you are currently using radios we can adapt and program newer models to work with your existing ones. This will allow you to continue to operate without downtime.

Q: What is the difference between FRS and GMRS radios?

A:
FRS or Family Radio Service radios are small handhelds, normally for recreational uses over a relatively short range. FRS radios operate over 14 dedicated channels (1-14) and have a maximum allowable power of 0.5 watt. GMRS or General Mobile Radio Service radios operate on dedicated channels (15-22) and have power rating of 1.0 to 5.0 watts with a maximum of 50 watts.

Q: Can I really communicate over 26 miles as advertised on the package?

A:
No. FRS-GMRS 22 Channel radios have GMRS frequencies that achieve greater ranges than FRS Frequencies. GMRS range is advertised by manufacturers as "up to 26 miles"  This is a maximum range, likely achieved only under optimal conditions by manufacturers' only. Realistic range for GMRS frequencies under most conditions is more likely 1-2 miles, depending upon the particular conditions. Understanding Range Claims
